Lai Huat Seafood Restaurant

This corner-coffeeshop-located eatery is popular for their pepper crayfish and belacan fish (which is not as fresh as I would like it to be, although this is expected for fried fish dishes as most Chinese chefs know to reserve their better stock for steamed fish dishes.). Still, it is one of the more consistent and affordable zhichar/seafood shops around. More than a decade ago, it was situated in an old pre-war shophouse near Beach Road, then it moved to Lavender Street (beside the MRT station) and for the past few years it has been operating at this little side road parallel to Jalan Besar, near the Jalan Besar Stadium / Swimming / Sports Complex. It seems to have opened a branch (223 Rangoon Road) and another along Mountbatten Road (to be verified) in the past few months (2006).

Tel:6295-6358. There has been a proliferation of Heng Hwa food eateries and restaurants in Singapore and, in particular, the Jalan Besar area. As of end-2006, I noticed at least 3 or 4 copycat Pu Tien-style restaurants and coffeeshop eateries with similar names in the Jalan Besar area and none so blatant as "Pu Tien Seafood Restaurant" at the corner shop of the row of shophouses along Kitchener Road where this restaurant is based. Don't be fooled, this restaurant (at No.127) is the original one with this name and was set up back in year 2000. And it is still one of the best for 兴化 food.

This traditional Teochew stall was originally from the area near the old Thong Chai (or Tong Chi to Teochews) Medical Institution in Chinatown/Merchant Road. It is famous for a Teochew dish called ter kah tang (猪脚冻) made from pig trotters that is boiled with pig skin and other parts until a soft gelatinous base is formed, then chilled into a jelly and served cold in small strip pieces. The other signature dish is white shark's meat (白牙沙鱼), another Teochew favourite. This stall's shark meat is extremely white and fresh - the owner says he will not sell it for the day if the morning market cannot provide the quality sharks he requires. The food is served with two types of sauce - a plum-extract-based sweet sauce sprinkled with crushed peanuts, and a quite-common sourish chilli paste. So good are the sauces that the owner charges (20c @) for extras helpings. I didn't care much for the chilli sauce but the plum sauce went very well with the two dishes.

The specialties here include roasted duck served in sweet plum sauce, crab bee hoon (you have a choice of fried or soup versions) - the bee hoon itself has two variations the normal beehoon (米粉) and the tang hoon (冬粉) version which is a clear glassy noodle (they name it 'vermicelli' here which I believe isn't exactly correct). Dine in comfort be it lunch or dinner as the eatery is fully airconditioned. Tel: 6294-6254, 6292-9251.

Despite its recommendation by Makansutra some years back, the braised duck meat of this stall is disappointingly second rate. The saving grace was the chilli sauce and lor(soya sauce seasoning) which still could not hide the fact that the bony duck meat didn't taste very fresh. With this standard for the common duck, I won't be venturing into goose territory.

You wouldn't know at first glance because the stall front display overflows with a range of traditional teochew kuehs (glutinous rice kueh, ou kueh, ku chye kueh and soon kueh) and other snacks. Looks like we've finally found the missing link between kueh and kway (as in chye tow kway a.k.a. carrot cake) ;-)

This is one among the many stalls that serve masala tea (chai masala) in Tekka Food Centre. I've tried a few stalls but this one is my preferred. The tea comes with a generous scoop of masala powder and isn't too sweet unlike that from stall #01-327. In total, I counted 4 drinks shops - #320, 322, 325 and #327 - all selling teh masala and ginger tea (teh halia) within the same row of stalls. This must undoubtedly be Singapore's Masala Tea Row ! The other shops in the row are all halal food stalls selling mutton soup, chicken/mutton bryani, mutton chops, tulang (mutton bone with marrow), roti prata, Indian rojak and other local Malay/Indian dishes. Just this row of hawker stalls alone makes it worth your while to visit Tekka Market & Food Centre.

This is the famous stall that made the headlines in Singapore and Hongkong in July 2006, when it refused to open beyond its usual operating hours to serve Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. It made the news again in January 2007, when ex-Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, 4 months after his ousting in a military coup, made his way here for lunch in a visit to Singapore. He reportedly ate with an entourage of 17 and after that gave the thumbs up to Mr Ng, the shop owner. What more can I say ? And where else can you pay less than $10 for a meal and maybe get to eat beside the movers and shakers of Asia ? Right here at this little corner of Rangoon Road.
