Yong Tau Foo

Also spelled 'Yong Tau Hu', 'Yong Tow Foo' and 'Yong Tow Hu'. An assortment of pre-cooked ingredients mostly made from a soya beancurd base (tau hu, tau kwa) and vegetables such as kangkong and mushrooms. The customer selects the individual ingredients in an a la carte manner and the server reheats them with the choice of noodles in hot boiling soup. The most common noodles are thick yellow noodles and bee hoon (vermicelli), served in the soup, or in a separate bowl with the ingredients.

I am putting this here because it was a former Yummy King #1 winner (taxi-drivers' vote category). Despite this, I have not tried it to-date, and the reason is that each time I'm here, I eat at the other stall, 永祥兴豆腐, located at unit#01-1084 (see other entry on this category).

* Editor's hanyu pinyin translation, this stall doesn't have a romanized/English name.

According to my source, this stall has been around a long time. You can see why based on the long queue (which moves quite fast btw). Now I wonder how it slipped past Makansutra's radar which recommended Gao Ji (see other entry this category) instead.
For a sure-winner yong tau hu meal, this is the stall to go to. The soup is well-prepared and good to the last drop. $3 gets you ten solid pieces including 3 fishballs, minced meat beancurd and other variants of the white and fried beancurd. An interesting difference between this stall and many others is that they do NOT serve noodles, just the yong tau fu and soup (with chilli sauce of course), that's it. Closed by late afternoon or when stocks run out.

Xiu Ji Ikan Bilis Yong Tau Fu 秀记江鱼仔酿豆腐

Chinatown Complex Food Centre (temp)
Both the Chinatown Complex market and food centre have shifted to a temporary site near the Outram MRT (EW16, NE3) train station. It is a tight squeeze and much stuffier now.
Xiu Ji Ikan Bilis Yong Tau Fu
Xiu Ji Ikan Bilis Yong Tau Fu occupies two stall units, and you can see why from the long queue that snakes around the surrounding tables.

Found at a corner of the centre lane of this hawker centre is this yong tau hu stall. Nothing mind-blowing about the food, but I did spot a member of parliament (MP) there having his late lunch. Mind you this food centre is located near the start (Lor 1) of the Geylang Road food stretch. So if the stall's good enough for him, it must be good enough for the rest of us yeah ? :)

Kwan Inn Vegetarian Food's most popular dishes seem to be their mimic zhi-char dishes
vegetarian laksa
This hearty bowl of vegetarian laksa costs $2. A decent attempt, considering that no shrimps, belacan or ikan bilis could be used here

I'm told this vegetarian eatery was a previous Yummy King winner. It actually consists of a few stalls in a coffeeshop selling various vegetarian dishes that mimic conventional Chinese hawker food. The coffeeshop is at a corner-end of a row of HDB shophouses facing Sims Avenue. Some Buddhist temples are found in this area of Geylang, which explains why you'll see the occasional nun or monk buying their food at this shop. There are zhi-char-style vegetarian dishes, a vegetarian yong tau foo stall and a mixed rice/beehoon stall. Prices are very reasonable from $2 up. I've tried the mixed bee hoon several years ago which didn't leave any impression. A more recent visit saw me having a bowl of laksa which was pretty decent tasting considering that they couldn't use animal-based ingredients and condiments that many a good laksa maker tends to use, such as dried shrimps, mini ikan bilis (chinese silver fish 银鱼) and belacan paste. I'll be back soon for the zhi-char noodle dishes which seem to be popular going by a survey of the diners here.

928 (Hakka) Ampang Yong Tou Fou. So many name variations and so many ways of spelling yong tau foo !
hakka ampang yong tau foo
So this is hakka style niang doufu ? hmmm....drenched a little too starchily for my liking, but I quite like the crispy fried beancurd skins. Yay !

This hakka yong tau hu is a little different from the usual yong tau hu found in hawker centres / foodcourts. See the photo and go try it yourself to taste the difference. For one, there's a copius amount of green leafy vegetables thrown in with the dish. In fact, it seemed like more than half of the whole plate. Then there's the starchy gooey sauce that's used to douse the whole lot. Surprisingly, everything went quite well with a bowl of rice (plus chilli sauce of course). The stall itself is part of a bigger 2-unit coffeeshop that houses other food choices here. So you can mix-and-match or order other stuff if you find that hakka style cooking doesn't suit your tastebuds.
